Finding balance

As parents, one of the most important ways we can support our young athlete is by helping them manage their mental and emotional well-being. The demands of sports can be overwhelming, and our kids often feel the pressure to perform, which can lead to stress, anxiety, or even burnout. By creating a positive, pressure-free environment at home, we can help them focus on progress, not just outcomes. We can celebrate effort over results, encourage them to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, and remind them that challenges are opportunities for growth.

It’s equally important that we help our children find balance between their sport and other parts of life. We can encourage regular breaks to recharge mentally and physically, and make time for activities that bring joy outside of hockey. By being supportive listeners when they need to talk about frustrations or worries, we can help them recognize that their value isn’t defined by their performance on the ice. By nurturing both their mental and physical well-being, we’re setting them up for success—not only as athletes, but as resilient, confident individuals.
